Glossary
Interpretation and event-technology terms, explained simply.
- Simultaneous interpretation
- The real-time spoken translation of a speech from one language into another, with a delay of just a few seconds behind the speaker. Participants listen through headsets while the speaker continues uninterrupted.
- Consecutive interpretation
- The speaker pauses periodically and the interpreter delivers the message in the other language. No equipment needed, but it doubles the time of every intervention — suited to short speeches or bilateral negotiations.
- Whispered interpretation (chuchotage)
- The interpreter whispers the translation directly into the ear of one or two participants, with no equipment. Works only for very small groups.
- Relay interpretation
- For rare language combinations: one interpreter translates into a pivot language (usually English or French), and a second interpreter takes it from there into the final target language.
- RSI (Remote Simultaneous Interpretation)
- Simultaneous interpretation where interpreters work remotely, through a dedicated platform, instead of being physically present in the booth. Essential for hybrid or fully online events.
- Interpretation booth
- The sound-isolated space interpreters work from, either fixed (built into the venue) or mobile (brought in for the event). Must offer a clear view of the speaker and screen.
- ISO 4043
- The international standard for mobile interpretation booths — dimensions, acoustics and sightlines. Applies to equipment brought in for the event.
- ISO 2603
- The international standard for fixed interpretation booths, permanently built into a venue — typically required for institutional or EU-level events.
- Interpreter console
- The panel inside the booth, with a microphone, headset and channel selector, used by the interpreter to monitor the room's audio and deliver the translation.
- Tour guide system
- Portable equipment (transmitter + individual receivers) that lets a guide or interpreter speak to a moving group without raising their voice — useful for tours, factory visits or small meetings.
- Hybrid event
- An event combining participants physically present in the room with participants joining online, usually through a platform like Zoom or Teams, with live production and interpretation for both groups.
- Bosch DICENTIS
- A digital conference and simultaneous interpretation system used by TMG Events, covering up to 32 simultaneous language channels on a single setup.
- Williams Sound
- A manufacturer of receivers and headsets for audio distribution to participants, used by TMG Events for both simultaneous interpretation and tour guide systems, on radio frequency.
